President Joe Biden has called for calm in the wake of murder charges being filed against a Memphis police officer in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Black man.

"I know emotions are running high, but justice must be served calmly, fairly, and impartially," the president said in a statement.

"We must all come together as Americans to ensure that happens."

The incident occurred on March 23, 2021, when Brandon Webber was shot and killed by Memphis police officers during a traffic stop in the city's Frayser neighborhood.

The shooting sparked protests in the area and calls for justice for Webber and his family.

On Tuesday, a Tennessee grand jury indicted the officer, identified as Connor Schilling, on first-degree murder charges.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

"The death of Brandon Webber is a tragic loss and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones," Biden said.

"No family should have to bear the pain of losing a child under these circumstances."

The president called for a full and thorough investigation into the incident, and urged the community to come together to heal and move forward.
